Subnautica is a single-player experience that tends to focus on players gathering resources, building an underwater base, trying to survive, and exploring the mysteries of the vast sea. The game features dozens of locations spread across the open map for you to discover.
However, if you wish to explore all of the places and stay healthy, you will need to have your own base so that you can replenish resources and continue your journey safely. Since there are so many locations where you can build your base, this guide will show you the best place to build a base in Subnautica.
The best places to build your base in Subnautica are:
- Grassy Plateau
- Jellyshroom Caves
- The Cove Tree
While you can build your base in other locations as well, the ones mentioned above are some of the best. This is either due to their overall location on the map or the number of resources they have. If you want to know about a few other locations as well, continue reading to check them out. With that said, let’s dive right in and take a look at the best place to build a base in Subnautica.
Grassy Plateau
The Grassy Plateau is easily the best location for you to build your base, especially in the early game. This biome has vast open spaces that are perfect for building your base without running into any obstacles. On top of that, if you want to use solar power for your base, you can do that since this area isn’t that deep.
Apart from its location, you can also find tons of small and large wrecks nearby. This allows you to easily salvage them and gain a lot of resources early on. Plus, you can also find almost all the basic resource materials that you would need at this stage of the game. You can even build your base here during the later stages of the game and have a good time.
With that said, though, I would highly advise that you keep an eye out for various predators. Since this is an early game location, you won’t run into creatures that could kill you instantly. However, there are still predators lurking around, so, make sure that you check out your surroundings and swim away if you spot anything.
As a whole, the Grassy Plateau is a great location for you to set up shop and explore the ocean. You can easily spot this location thanks to the beautiful blood grass and the vast open space. The best part about this is that you can even expand your base without running into any obstacles since the area is quite abundant in terms of open space.
Jellyshroom Cave
During your exploration adventures, you will come across this beautiful area known as the Jellyshroom Cave. It is one of those locations where you just sit back and enjoy the view. The best part about this area is that there are few predators lurking around. You can find crabsnakes but that’s about it.
In terms of resources, you can find plenty here and a few rare ones as well such as Gold, Diamond, Lithium, and Magnetite. In fact, this is the only area in the game that has a large supply of Magnetite. So, if you want to farm that material, this is the best location to visit.
The area has a total of four entrances that you can use to roam around. Having this many entrances means that you can come in and out of this place without having to find the entrance.
However, one major drawback of this area is that it is quite deep – 180-300 meters in depth. Due to that, you need to use the Seamoth or you won’t be able to enter this area due to its depth. Once you get the Seamoth, though, you can freely explore without any worries. Plus, thanks to the large area, you can build a massive base and expand it as well.
The Cove Tree
In terms of sheer aesthetic and ambiance, the Cove Tree surpasses everything in Subnautica. Not only does it look beautiful, but it also has a lot of resources and is quite close to the lava zone – an end-game location. You can find tons of basic and rare materials here and either use them to build your base or store them for future use.
Plus, you will not find any predators here which is one of the best things about this area. You can roam around without any fear of getting attacked. If you want to get creative, you can build your base around the massive Cove Tree and take in the wonderful view.
While all of that is good, there is one major drawback to this area – it is extremely deep. Due to that, you will need the Prawn or the Cyclops to go here. Once you have either one of them, you can freely explore. Plus, this area is almost in the center of most end-game locations. This means that you can easily go there from your base.
Also, you might have already figured it out that you cannot build a base here during the early stages of the game due to its depth. So, once you have the required things, go to the Cove Tree and build your base there.
The Floating Island
Finally, I added one extra location for you so that you will have more options to choose from when building your base. You will come across the Floating Island a bit later in your game but the best part about this area is that there are absolutely no predators here.
On top of that, you will have ample space to build and expand your base without any worries of running out of the area to build on. Plus, it is located above sea level as well. So, if you want to try out something different and build your base on land, you can always visit the Floating Island and start building.
In terms of resources and materials, you can find edible plants – most of which are exclusive to this area such as the Lantern Tree. So, you won’t run out of necessities while your stay here. However, you will have to dive back into the water to gather other resources since this area doesn’t have a lot of them. I would call that the biggest downside of this entire area.
Make sure that you bring a lot of materials so that you can start building your base here. Otherwise, you will have to dive back into the water over and over again. However, if the resource aspect of this location does not bother you, you will have a great time here. Since there isn’t any danger here, you can safely rest and plan your next move.
The coolest thing about Floating Island is its dual entrance. You can either hop on this island by coming through the main entrance that is situated on the beach or you can enter it from underwater. If you go below the island, you will find an area where you can enter it. If you build your base around this area, you will have a beautiful little pond in the center that you can use to have quick access to the sea.
