Appearance

Menace is an arthropod bear-plushie creature that can shift between 2 forms. Its cuddly form makes it look like a fluffy purple bear, with 2 hearts that are on its head and chest respectively and 2 small round antenna. The legs are small and stumpy, with the torso being a little heavyset with a shell on its back and a tail with a scorpion stinger or razor claw at the end, but because of being normally coiled down, it resembles a rounder stubby tail, while the stinger is still visible but on the lower body except when uncoiled sometimes during idle animations. Its nightmare form, fully visible when running, aggroing, sitting or laying down, has its face open like a flower to reveal rows of black, sharp teeth (with some of those teeth being projective like those of Diokrine) on a chitinous-like structure. The lower thighs of the bear legs unfold to reveal extra digits on the legs with claws, making it resemble arthropod extremities. The bear chest heart unfolds into 2 arthropod arms with long claws and the stubby tail remains permanently uncoiled to reveal its full length. The segmented neck extends a little bit, while the shell remains the same. Both the neck and mouth change into its nightmare form while eating.

Abilities

Burrower (2)
Burrower is an active ability that allows the user to place up to 4 (or a specific creature limit) burrows anywhere on the map and use burrows created by other players. If a user places more entrances than the maximum allowed, the oldest burrow and exit will be replaced. A user cannot place a burrow entrance inside its own burrow or inside someone else's burrow. There is a 3 second cooldown between entering and exiting burrows, excluding entering a burrow after its initial placement.
Cause Fear
Cause Fear is an active ability and Recode's equivalent of Fear. It gives all creatures around the user 10 stacks (30 seconds) of Scared Status effect, and has a cooldown of 120 seconds (2 minutes).
Egg Stealer
Egg Stealer is an active ability that allows creatures to steal eggs from the nests of other players. If a creature has this ability, eggs are also highlighted with an egg icon when scenting.
Hunters Curse
Hunters Curse is an active ability that costs half of total health to use but grants 10 stacks (30 seconds) of the Hunters Curse status, which increases damage by 100%. It has a 120 second cooldown.
Block Bleed (0.75)
Bleed Block/Block Bleed is a percentage based passive ability that grants the user resistance to getting bleed status from melee attacks at minimum. If an attacker deals 5 bleed per hit and the receiver has 60% Block Bleed, then the receiver gets only 2 of that 5 bleed. This ability is gained gradually as the creature ages. If a creature's Block Bleed is 100%, then they are immune to Bleed inflicted by melee direct attacks once fully grown. If a creature's Block Bleed is negative, it may indicate an extra vulnerability to the status effect.
Block Burn (-0.50)
Burn Block/Block Burn is a passive ability that grants the user resistance to getting burn status from melee attacks. It is percentage based. For example, if an attacker deals 5 burn per hit and the receiver has 60% block burn, then the receiver gets only 2 of that 5 burn. If a creature's block burn is 100%, then they are immune to Burn inflicted by melee direct attacks once fully grown. This ability is gained gradually as the creature ages. A negative value may indicate that the creature is vulnerable to burn effects.
Block Necropoison (0.35)
Block Necropoison is a resistance against the Necropoison Status that reduces the amount of status absorbed and damage dealt by it when accumulating this status.
Block Poison (1.00)
Block Poison/Poison Block is a passive ability that grants resistance to poison status once they reach max age (100). Like many other block defenses, it works by blocking a percentage of the ailment received. If a creature's Poison Block is 100%, then they are immune to those stats (and will be healed instantly if they are somehow applied) once they reach age 100.
Climber
Climber is a passive ability that allows the user to walk on walls and ceilings. To detach from a wall, press the Space on PC. On Mobile, press the dedicated Detach button, or, if the creature has Jump, press the jump button.
Corrosion Attack (1)
Corrosion Attack/Corrosion Bite is an ability that offensively deals Corrosion when biting. It stacks with itself. A negative value means that it heals an amount of such status upon biting.
Pack Healer
Pack Healer is a pack-oriented passive ability. This passive ability allows the user to boost the HP regen of their fellow packmates.
Necropoison Attack (1.5)
Necropoison Attack is a passive ability that allows the user to deal Necropoison Status to any creature it bites. It stacks with itself but does not get worse over time. A negative value means that it heals an amount of such status upon biting.

Behavior

  • Menace are rather clever, and will pick off the least important creatures in a group and make its way up to the more important ones until there are none left.
  • Some Menace species have learned and evolved to mimic other creatures.
  • A Menace's 'ears' are temperature sensing organs that allow it to 'see' its surroundings.
  • Menace can store items and their eggs on their back, underneath their shells. They could also use those to mask their scent to smell nice or undetectable.
  • Menaces vary from independent to gregarious; often they can be found alone in groups with different species, but if they lack a group or ate all of their group and can't find another they might herd up with other Menaces without groups so they are able to take down larger prey. Then they will split off again if they have found a new suitable group.
  • Menaces do not eat each other.
  • A large group of Menaces would probably be pretty dangerous, depending on who/what you are and how much company you have; if there is a pack of large creatures they might back out of the way; but single large creature could be in danger If you see a single Menace then you are probably fine if you are not alone.
  • Menace can be petted, but due to their instincts it is unlikely and dangerous to domesticate one. It would be more likely to train one, the thing someone would need to watch out for is its instincts to act nice in large groups and then slowly pick off stuff one by one when they are alone.

Lore (non-canon)

  • Menace face plates can unhinge and allow the Menace to swallow its prey whole. Sometimes said prey is almost as large as itself.
  • Menaces supposedly resemble a now extinct species. It is possible that they were so good at blending in and preying on them that the species was entirely wiped out.
  • Most of their digestion takes place in their lower neck area.
  • Menaces probably smell dusty or like old bones, but it depends, they could hide stuff in their shells like flowers if they want to smell nice, or hide their scent with other stuff or the creatures they stay around with.
  • Menaces probably taste stale, like an old cricket.
  • Menace are flammable.

Trivia

  • Concept by CatasticalCalamity. Inspired by "mimics, bakugan, caterpillars, mantids, bears/teddy bears, plushies, scorpions, and 'various creatures with spooky splitting jaws full of teeth'".
  • Modeled by Fizzyton.
  • Animated by Minisode1_BlueHour.
  • Before the Menace's release, its second form was not known to the public until February 1st, 2024, a day before being officially added to the game. Menace is the first creature to feature multiple forms/appearances ingame.
  • Menace is one of the few creatures that has its name as a standard English word, another example of this is Lure.
