Appearance

The Cantapodi displays a colorful skin pattern, with the default colors being tan, pink, dark brown, and green. The Cantapodi has two toes on each foot, resembling a chameleon, and is intricately decorated with numerous spikes and prickly pear flower buds. It has the natural stance of a kangaroo and other creatures with long tails, using it when walking and leaning on it when idle. It also has a long, spiky tail with three flowers at the tip, emulating a giant long cacti. It appears shorter than it is due to the spiral curvature of its spine-covered tail. Adult Cantapodi present three horns on the frontal region of their head.

Abilities

Burrower (4)
Burrower is an active ability that allows the user to place up to 4 (or a specific creature limit) burrows anywhere on the map and use burrows created by other players. If a user places more entrances than the maximum allowed, the oldest burrow and exit will be replaced. A user cannot place a burrow entrance inside its own burrow or inside someone else's burrow. There is a 3 second cooldown between entering and exiting burrows, excluding entering a burrow after its initial placement.
Egg Stealer
Egg Stealer is an active ability that allows creatures to steal eggs from the nests of other players. If a creature has this ability, eggs are also highlighted with an egg icon when scenting.
Latch
Latch is an active ability that allows the user to latch onto higher-tiered creatures. Creatures that the user has latched into cannot escape for 5 seconds. After that, the latched creature can struggle by pressing any button and will release such creature from the latch. The user can unlatch at any moment by pressing the same button used to latch in the first place.
Thorn Trap
Thorn Trap is an active ability that allows the user to drop a trap of thorny plant growth. When a creature triggers a trap, it disappears, and they receive six stacks of Bleed/Bleed Status and two stacks of FREEZE, which temporarily immobilize the target's actions. It has a 35-second cooldown. Up to 3 thorn traps thorn traps can be placed by the same creature. If more than 3 thorn traps are placed at one time, the oldest one will despawn.
Bleed Attack (2)
Bleed Attack is a passive ability, where the user inflicts a specific amount of bleed status on a creature with every bite, excluding with breath/ranged abilities or reflecting abilities. A negative value means that it heals an amount of such status upon biting.
Block Bleed (0.5)
Bleed Block/Block Bleed is a percentage based passive ability that grants the user resistance to getting bleed status from melee attacks at minimum. If an attacker deals 5 bleed per hit and the receiver has 60% Block Bleed, then the receiver gets only 2 of that 5 bleed. This ability is gained gradually as the creature ages. If a creature's Block Bleed is 100%, then they are immune to Bleed inflicted by melee direct attacks once fully grown. If a creature's Block Bleed is negative, it may indicate an extra vulnerability to the status effect.
Block Frostbite (-0.25)
Frostbite Block/Block Frostbite is a passive ability that grants the user resistance to getting frostbite status from melee attacks at the very least, and every other source at most. It is percentage based, e.g. if an attacker deals 5 frostbite per hit and the receiver has 60% block frostbite, then the receiver gets only 2 of that 5 frostbite.
Charge (Gore)
Charge is a passive ability that gradually fills an orange "Charge" bar (unique to creatures with this ability) while running. Once completely full, clicking (Lmb on PC or on Mobile or RT on Xbox) will apply special effects on a creature the user is hitting. If the bar is not full, charge effects may be reduced or non-existent. Current Charge types:
Defensive Bleed (4)
Defensive Bleed is a passive ability where the user defensively inflicts a specific amount of bleed status on their attacker upon being bitten.
Iron Stomach
Iron Stomach is a passive ability that allows the user to eat rotten meat without getting negative ailments from it--preventing them from getting the Sickly Status.
Strength In Numbers
Strength In Numbers is a passive ability that gives the user a 7% stamina regeneration boost and a 1.5% damage boost. It stacks according to how many creatures with the same ability and species are nearby. If there are no other users with this ability nearby, it will not provide the boost.

Behavior

  • Similar to snakes, Cantapodi will bury their eggs to keep them safe from predators and to shield them from the scorching sun. When they hatch, they band together and form a temporary pack as a defense before eventually branching off as they mature.
  • While the Cantapodi are blind, they can map out their surroundings using a “sixth sense” not unlike that of a modern platypus. Their sense of smell and adept hearing also helps make up for the lack of sight.

Trivia

  • Designed by kazooduder on the Creatures of Sonaria Discord. Cantapodi was based on chameleons and cacti design-wise, while also based on a kangaroo movement-wise, similar to Diesura as it hops and leans back on its tail in idle or while sitting.
  • Modeled, rigged, and animated by Erythia.
  • Redesign concept by Austroraptors.
  • Redesign modeled by ScratchyPaws and rigged by Mezzioli.
  • Redesign animated by kazooduder.
  • The Cantapodi has green blood. Due to this, when killed in the Legacy version of the game, the Cantapodi drops a green carcass. This is an actual color in some Earth creatures: both from those that use chlorocruorin, a green oxygen carrier that replaces hemoglobin in some invertebrates' blood and in some vertebrates (like some green-blooded lizards) that have adapted to carry lethal amounts of biliverdin in their blood, which is a toxic byproduct of heme catabolism whose only good side is that it has antimutagenic properties. It is possibly green just because of the inspiration of this creature, meaning the blood could be a sap, which is more fitting for the Cantapodi.
