Appearance
The Hemokai is a lizard-like creature, resembling a Gila monster. Vivid green striped markings span from its neck and down its slender body. The Hemokai has small glowing yellow spikes that lay along its back on top of a turquoise and jade fin. It has five claws on each foot which are a glowing yellow, unlike the rest of its leg. The majority of the body is a dark navy-blue shade. Its mouth is long and composed of small, sharp, white teeth and a green tongue. The Hemokai's eyes are a small, glowing yellow bead with black sclera, surrounded by a green line going around it.
Hemokai has no gender dimorphism.
Abilities
Burrower (3)
Burrower is an active ability that allows the user to place up to 4 (or a specific creature limit) burrows anywhere on the map and use burrows created by other players. If a user places more entrances than the maximum allowed, the oldest burrow and exit will be replaced. A user cannot place a burrow entrance inside its own burrow or inside someone else's burrow. There is a 3 second cooldown between entering and exiting burrows, excluding entering a burrow after its initial placement.
Latch (2)
Latch is an active ability that allows the user to latch onto higher-tiered creatures. Creatures that the user has latched into cannot escape for 5 seconds. After that, the latched creature can struggle by pressing any button and will release such creature from the latch. The user can unlatch at any moment by pressing the same button used to latch in the first place.
Agile Swimmer
Agile Swimmer is a passive ability that causes the player to receive the following buffs when submerged underwater for more than a second: 100% more stamina regeneration 50% more total stamina 75% more walk speed 75% more sprint speed A % increase in oxygen (oxygen increase percentage is based off the amount of oxygen the creature originally has) Additionally, a glider semi-aquatic (and an aqua-glider) can abuse the extra stamina to increase the number of glide flaps it can perform from the water boosted. Until they touch the ground or stop gliding, the boosted stamina amount will remain.
Block Bleed (0.20)
Bleed Block/Block Bleed is a percentage based passive ability that grants the user resistance to getting bleed status from melee attacks at minimum. If an attacker deals 5 bleed per hit and the receiver has 60% Block Bleed, then the receiver gets only 2 of that 5 bleed. This ability is gained gradually as the creature ages. If a creature's Block Bleed is 100%, then they are immune to Bleed inflicted by melee direct attacks once fully grown. If a creature's Block Bleed is negative, it may indicate an extra vulnerability to the status effect.
Block Poison (1.00)
Block Poison/Poison Block is a passive ability that grants resistance to poison status once they reach max age (100). Like many other block defenses, it works by blocking a percentage of the ailment received. If a creature's Poison Block is 100%, then they are immune to those stats (and will be healed instantly if they are somehow applied) once they reach age 100.
Climber
Climber is a passive ability that allows the user to walk on walls and ceilings. To detach from a wall, press the Space on PC. On Mobile, press the dedicated Detach button, or, if the creature has Jump, press the jump button.
Iron Stomach
Iron Stomach is a passive ability that allows the user to eat rotten meat without getting negative ailments from it--preventing them from getting the Sickly Status.
Poison Attack (4.5)
Poison Attack is a passive ability that makes the user deal Poison Status to another creature upon biting them. It stacks with itself. A negative value means that it heals an amount of such status upon biting.
Toxic Trail (0.25)
Toxic Trail is a passive ability activated only when the user is below a creature-specific health percentage. It leaves behind a trail made up of segments that last for 5 seconds before despawning. Stepping on the trail causes 3% damage per second and 3 stacks of poison per second.
Trivia
- Original and redesign concepts by Dragonbab (aka Artistep) on the Creatures of Sonaria Discord. The original Hemokai was mainly inspired by real life poisonous animals to try and make Hemokai more realistic, as well as having a theme of a 'mean lizard'. Hemokai is a word in Māori that translates to 'famine', 'hunger', or 'starvation', which fits as the Hemokai is described as "always hungry". Hemokai was planned to be named Hemokai-Stalkeri (stalker), but it was changed to just Hemokai. Hemokai's pattern had been changed 4 times, the last (and final) one being a mix of the second and last design.
- Original design modeled by TamBrush. The Hemokai used to be considered to have come from the planet Daimona, but this has been changed after TamBrush's resignment from CoS, making this creature a regular Sonarian.
- Original design animated and rigged by Erythia.
- Redesign animated by Aphauxin and Mukudori.
- There is a UGC item based on Hemokai added to Roblox called Toxic Lizard Friend, which was previously purchasable for 75 Robux and is now offsale. Made by TamBrush.
- It was one of the few creatures that were playable during alpha stage.

- Hemokai was the first land creature that received the Agile Swimmer ability.
