Appearance

The Puffwump is a small, bipedal creature thats appearance seems to take inspiration from raptors. The majority of its body is covered in thick feathers and down, so much so it looks like a cotton ball. It has small arms and skinny legs that stick out of its fluff. It also has a long, thin featherless tail, with a clump of feathers on the tip. The body is white, with some patches of orange-yellow on the body, and a fully orange tail fan. Its skin is grayish shade of brown, with small darker brown freckles on its beak.

**Males**: Males have a large feather adorning their forehead, along with a few other, thinner feathers.

Abilities

Burrower (4)
Burrower is an active ability that allows the user to place up to 4 (or a specific creature limit) burrows anywhere on the map and use burrows created by other players. If a user places more entrances than the maximum allowed, the oldest burrow and exit will be replaced. A user cannot place a burrow entrance inside its own burrow or inside someone else's burrow. There is a 3 second cooldown between entering and exiting burrows, excluding entering a burrow after its initial placement.
Egg Stealer
Egg Stealer is an active ability that allows creatures to steal eggs from the nests of other players. If a creature has this ability, eggs are also highlighted with an egg icon when scenting.
Bleed Attack (1)
Bleed Attack is a passive ability, where the user inflicts a specific amount of bleed status on a creature with every bite, excluding with breath/ranged abilities or reflecting abilities. A negative value means that it heals an amount of such status upon biting.
Block Bleed (0.5)
Bleed Block/Block Bleed is a percentage based passive ability that grants the user resistance to getting bleed status from melee attacks at minimum. If an attacker deals 5 bleed per hit and the receiver has 60% Block Bleed, then the receiver gets only 2 of that 5 bleed. This ability is gained gradually as the creature ages. If a creature's Block Bleed is 100%, then they are immune to Bleed inflicted by melee direct attacks once fully grown. If a creature's Block Bleed is negative, it may indicate an extra vulnerability to the status effect.
Block Burn (-0.35)
Burn Block/Block Burn is a passive ability that grants the user resistance to getting burn status from melee attacks. It is percentage based. For example, if an attacker deals 5 burn per hit and the receiver has 60% block burn, then the receiver gets only 2 of that 5 burn. If a creature's block burn is 100%, then they are immune to Burn inflicted by melee direct attacks once fully grown. This ability is gained gradually as the creature ages. A negative value may indicate that the creature is vulnerable to burn effects.
Block Frostbite (0.5)
Frostbite Block/Block Frostbite is a passive ability that grants the user resistance to getting frostbite status from melee attacks at the very least, and every other source at most. It is percentage based, e.g. if an attacker deals 5 frostbite per hit and the receiver has 60% block frostbite, then the receiver gets only 2 of that 5 frostbite.
Broodwatcher
Broodwatcher is a passive ability that allows users to assist in the gestation of other players' eggs. It applies one stack of Gestation to nearby creatures, which increases other creatures' egg gestation speed by 2.5%. The total buff any nesting species can receive is 5%, so only two Broodwatchers can be effective at any one time. Additionally, when sitting near a nest, the Broodwatcher gains 5 Defensive, which starts to decrease if they move.
Frosty
Frosty is a passive ability that causes the user to receive +25% stamina regeneration, +25% health regeneration, -25% thirst depletion, and -25% hunger depletion during Winter and Famine. Additionally, it prevents getting hypothermia from blizzards.
Sticky Fur
Sticky Fur is a passive ability that inflicts the Sticky Teeth Status to the attacker when bitten.
Strength In Numbers
Strength In Numbers is a passive ability that gives the user a 7% stamina regeneration boost and a 1.5% damage boost. It stacks according to how many creatures with the same ability and species are nearby. If there are no other users with this ability nearby, it will not provide the boost.

Behavior

  • Puffwump live in large groups of dozens of individuals. They may not be the strongest, but they are surprisingly bright for such small creatures.
  • The large groups live in complex burrows underground, using several burrows for different purposes. Communal nesting dens, food storage dens, and spacious sleeping dens are among the most common to see in Puffwump warrens.
  • Their light bodies aid in keeping them above freshly fallen snow, but they have no issues traveling through thick snow by digging their way through.
  • As a defense strategy, Puffwump have been known to rapidly burrow themselves in snow to hide from predators.
  • Although they usually choose to flee or hide from a dangerous situation, when it comes down to fighting, they rely on their large digging claws to scratch at their attackers. If other individuals are nearby, they will all quickly follow suit and pile on top of the predator. It’s not the most effective, but it is a sight to behold.
  • Newly hatched Puffwump have no feathers, and are kept underground in warm burrows until they grow their first feathers. They don’t get their bright tail plumes or spotting until adulthood.

Lore (non-canon)

  • A group of Puffwumps is called a Puffle.

Trivia

  • Concept art by kazooduder in the Creatures of Sonaria discord. Inspired by roadrunners, feathered raptors, and burrowing birds. Another heavy inspiration was an illustration of Leaellynasaura in the book All Yesterdays by C.M. Kösemen, John Conway, and Darren Naish.
  • Despite the description explicitly stating that Puffwump lives in cold environments, it originally didn't have the winter tag. Later Puffwump received the winter tag and now has immunity to the cold effects.
  • It's commonly called "chicken" and "puff" because of its appearance.
