Appearance

The Borenhir is an owl-like creature similar to the Athulyth. It has a faint clockwork/robot/ice crystal look, with metallic-looking plates and tipped line patterns. Its head features a large crest, and another crest appears as the base of its tail. Splotches, speckles, and various other patterns can be found on its wings and back, including three snowflake-shaped spikes protruding from its wings. Its color pallet consists of grey, white, and blue.

Borenhir has no gender dimorphism.

Abilities

Grab
Grab is an active ability that allows the user to pick up a lower-tiered creature. Grabbed creatures cannot escape for 5 seconds. After that, the grabbed creature can struggle by pressing any button and will be released from the grab. The user can ungrab at any moment by pressing the same button used to grab. A creature darting from outside water will grab any creature it finds automatically.
Snow Shield
The Snow Shield ability creates a large, protective dome around the user. It will only despawn once the user triggers the ability again, until the user leaves or menus, until the shield is broken via biting, or until the user dies. When the Snow Shield ability is active, the user's hunger and thirst will drain three times faster. Upon initial activation of the ability, the user will not be able to create another dome for another 5 minutes.
Block Bleed (1.00)
Bleed Block/Block Bleed is a percentage based passive ability that grants the user resistance to getting bleed status from melee attacks at minimum. If an attacker deals 5 bleed per hit and the receiver has 60% Block Bleed, then the receiver gets only 2 of that 5 bleed. This ability is gained gradually as the creature ages. If a creature's Block Bleed is 100%, then they are immune to Bleed inflicted by melee direct attacks once fully grown. If a creature's Block Bleed is negative, it may indicate an extra vulnerability to the status effect.
Block Frostbite (0.4)
Frostbite Block/Block Frostbite is a passive ability that grants the user resistance to getting frostbite status from melee attacks at the very least, and every other source at most. It is percentage based, e.g. if an attacker deals 5 frostbite per hit and the receiver has 60% block frostbite, then the receiver gets only 2 of that 5 frostbite.
First Strike (0.30)
First Strike is a passive ability that grants the user increased damage while they are above 75% health. The damage increase is depends on the creature and is reflected in its stat menu.
Frostbite Attack (1)
Frostbite Attack is an ability that offensively deals frostbite when biting. A negative value means that it heals an amount of such status upon biting.
Frosty
Frosty is a passive ability that causes the user to receive +25% stamina regeneration, +25% health regeneration, -25% thirst depletion, and -25% hunger depletion during Winter and Famine. Additionally, it prevents getting hypothermia from blizzards.

Behavior

  • The Borenhir often spend time with the Athulyth, being related to them. They both help each other. Borenhir are more alive and expressive than their counterpart and need to eat and drink like other creatures.

Trivia

  • Concept by JaxonBirb. Inspired by the Snow Owl from ARK: Survival Evolved, snowflakes, and royalty.
  • Modeled by Jaxonbirb.
  • Borenhir's first teaser was of an old book page showing Athulyth next to it, likely referencing their relation to one another. Like its sibling used to have, it had a bug that prevents it from grabbing other creatures and getting stuck in the process. This bug is now fixed.
  • Borenhir is the fifth owl-like creature (the previous four being the Saukuryn, Boreal Warden, Nyctoxon, and Athulyth) to be added to the game.
  • Borenhir has neon turquoise blue blood when bleeding. Due to this, when killed in the Legacy version of the game, the Borenhir drops a neon light blue carcass. This is an actual color in some Earth creatures, from those that use hemocyanin, a blue oxygen carrier that replaces hemoglobin in some invertebrates' blood, albeit not the exact shade as shown in-game.
  • Borenhir has one of the most unique aggro animations; its neck would become pieces and float. Some people mistook this for a bug.
