Appearance

The Jotunhel is a large flying mammalian-esque creature that resembles a combination of a wyvern and a seal or sea lion. Jotunhel's thick fur is adorned in various patterns of stripes, having stripes on its jaw, neck, thighs, wings, and tail. Jotunhel has a large jaw that is nearly identical in size to the upper section of its head, giving it a robust appearance. Jotunhel has two sets of eyes, both of which are similar in size and stacked diagonally to each-other. Jotunhel's large wings resemble the fins of a leopard seal, with humanoid hands tucked underneath the wings. The hands are used primarily for it to sprint; likely due to its legs being too short to reliably achieve fast speed without being off-balance. It has a long and sleek tail, complete with a shark-like fin near the middle area of the tail. The Jotunhel has webbed digitigrade legs, each with four toes. The Jotunhel's main colors consist of blacks, greys, whites, blue-greys, oranges/browns, and light blues. Its secondary colors consist of reds, black, richer blues, greys and whites.

**Males**: Males have additional fur, located along their chin and cheeks.

Abilities

Adrenaline
Adrenaline is an active ability that gives 10 stacks (30 seconds) of adrenaline, which increases movement speed by 25%, damage by 20%, and disables stamina regeneration while active.
Grab
Grab is an active ability that allows the user to pick up a lower-tiered creature. Grabbed creatures cannot escape for 5 seconds. After that, the grabbed creature can struggle by pressing any button and will be released from the grab. The user can ungrab at any moment by pressing the same button used to grab. A creature darting from outside water will grab any creature it finds automatically.
Agile Swimmer
Agile Swimmer is a passive ability that causes the player to receive the following buffs when submerged underwater for more than a second: 100% more stamina regeneration 50% more total stamina 75% more walk speed 75% more sprint speed A % increase in oxygen (oxygen increase percentage is based off the amount of oxygen the creature originally has) Additionally, a glider semi-aquatic (and an aqua-glider) can abuse the extra stamina to increase the number of glide flaps it can perform from the water boosted. Until they touch the ground or stop gliding, the boosted stamina amount will remain.
Bleed Attack (3)
Bleed Attack is a passive ability, where the user inflicts a specific amount of bleed status on a creature with every bite, excluding with breath/ranged abilities or reflecting abilities. A negative value means that it heals an amount of such status upon biting.
Block Bleed (0.25)
Bleed Block/Block Bleed is a percentage based passive ability that grants the user resistance to getting bleed status from melee attacks at minimum. If an attacker deals 5 bleed per hit and the receiver has 60% Block Bleed, then the receiver gets only 2 of that 5 bleed. This ability is gained gradually as the creature ages. If a creature's Block Bleed is 100%, then they are immune to Bleed inflicted by melee direct attacks once fully grown. If a creature's Block Bleed is negative, it may indicate an extra vulnerability to the status effect.
Block Frostbite (0.4)
Frostbite Block/Block Frostbite is a passive ability that grants the user resistance to getting frostbite status from melee attacks at the very least, and every other source at most. It is percentage based, e.g. if an attacker deals 5 frostbite per hit and the receiver has 60% block frostbite, then the receiver gets only 2 of that 5 frostbite.
Block Injury (0.4)
Injury Block/Block Injury is a passive ability that grants the user resistance to getting Injury status from melee attacks at the very least. It is percentage based, e.g. if an attacker deals 5 Injury per hit and the receiver has 60% Injury Block, then the receiver gets only 2 of that 5 Injury.
Diver (7)
Diver is a passive ability that grants the user the ability to temporarily keep flying underwater for a short period of time while retaining their diving speed. The exact period of time varies per creature.
Frosty
Frosty is a passive ability that causes the user to receive +25% stamina regeneration, +25% health regeneration, -25% thirst depletion, and -25% hunger depletion during Winter and Famine. Additionally, it prevents getting hypothermia from blizzards.
Serrated Teeth
Serrated Teeth is a passive ability that offensively inflicts Deep Wounds status when biting.

Trivia

  • Concept by malarkeii. The Jotunhel was inspired by leopard seals. The name "Jotunhel" may have been inspired by the name Jötunheimr, home to jötnars in Norse mythology, as Jotunhel are giant themselves. It may have also been inspired by Helheim and/or Hel, the frigid realm of the dead and the goddess that presides over it respectively.
  • Re-animated by @Mukudori#0053 on the official CoS Discord.
  • Jotunhel was the 2nd creature to be added to the Winter Gacha pool during the Winter Event of 2020-2021. It is confirmed to come back during Winter Events, along with the Boreal Warden, Sleirnok and other Winter Event creatures.
  • It is the second "all-terrain" creature to be added, with the first being Nytoltalus.
  • Jotunhel is the first creature to receive the Water Breath ability.
  • This creature once had a skin coloring bug, a single piece of the left wing will turn a different color (normally black), regardless of the chosen color. This fixes itself once growing to teen or adult.
  • Thanks to the colors on its second color palette, many people color the Jotunhel to look like a parrot/macaw even since early Legacy and being amongst the earliest creature-parrot skin trends. As such, some people do not only nickname them as "jot", but as "parrot/macaw" creature, even if nothing of their looks resembles such birds.
  • The Jotunhel once borrowed calls from the Aolenus before new calls were added on May 31st, 2021. [Expand] for Classic Calls.
