Abyss has 5 distinct biomes, each with unique fish, NPCs, and progression requirements. From the starting hub of Forgotten Deep to the hidden Angler Cave, this guide maps out every location, what you'll find there, and what you need to access it.

Forgotten Deep

"Once forgotten, now home."

Type: Starting Point

Forgotten Deep is the heart of the Abyss and the primary starting point for all players. It functions as a central hub where you'll find most of the essential service NPCs. The Kraken lives here in the center and sends you on your first missions.

Despite being the starting area, Forgotten Deep has a rich ecosystem including aggressive fish like the Barracuda (Epic). The sub-area Forgotten Dome contains the main shops for guns and tubes.

Ocean

"Endless blue serenity."

Type: Open Waters / Exploration Stage

The Ocean is the vast biome encountered after leaving Forgotten Deep. Nearly all adventurers must pass through these open waters to reach other biomes. It looks calm at first glance but hides secrets beneath the surface, including Bob's Room and Morveth's Cave.

The Ocean is home to fish required for many quests, making it an important area for progression. It's also where you'll find the Diver for delivery quests and the Lost Captain for the Angler Cave quest chain.

Ancient Sands

"Endless sand, sunken bones. Something old sleeps here."

Type: Polluted Depths / Exploration Stage

Ancient Sands is where the waters become heavily polluted with sand, drastically reducing visibility. Navigation is difficult, forcing players to rely on instinct rather than sight. Despite these conditions, the biome is home to unique fish with exclusive mutations found only here.

The area contains Jeff's Cave (shop with guns, tools, and potions), Marcus' archaeology site, Grumpy Hank's Sand Tower, and a hidden tunnel leading to secrets.

Spirit Roots

"The heart of the deep, where the tree's roots weave through the seafloor."

Type: Ancient Depths / Exploration Stage

Spirit Roots appears serene and calm upon first entry, with gentle currents and glowing vegetation. This tranquility is deceptive -- the biome is filled with hostile enemy fish that pose a constant threat.

Spirit Roots is progression-locked. You must complete Isolde's quests to fully open the biome. Once opened, it's the largest map in the game with diverse sea creatures and winding tunnels full of surprises. The sub-area Spirit Root Hollow contains additional shops and NPCs.

Angler Cave

Type: Hidden Area

The Angler Cave is unlocked after completing the Lost Captain's full quest chain. It's a small, dark area with only four fish and one NPC, but it contains both the King Anglerfish (Mythical) and the Lightkeeper's shop selling endgame equipment.

The intended progression path through biomes is:

  1. Forgotten Deep (starting area, depth 0-50m)
  2. Ocean (depth 50-375m) -- requires Pufferfish Tube or better
  3. Ancient Sands (depth 275-460m) -- requires Boat Tube or better
  4. Spirit Roots (depth 375-600m) -- requires Zepline Tube or better, plus Isolde's quests
  5. Angler Cave (depth 600m+) -- requires Lost Captain's full quest chain completion

How do I get to Ancient Sands?

Upgrade your tube to at least a Pufferfish Tube (180m depth) or Boat Tube (275m depth), then swim through the Ocean past Forgotten Deep.

How do I open Spirit Roots?

Complete Isolde's quest chain in Spirit Roots. She's found in her Hollow and gives quests that progressively revive the trees, opening up more of the biome.

How do I get into Angler Cave?

Complete all 4 of the Lost Captain's quests at his wrecked ship in the Ocean. This is one of the hardest quest chains in the game, requiring rare mutated fish and hundreds of treasure chests.
