Passives & Roll Chances
Races in Abyss grant permanent passive bonuses to your character stats. There are 16 races across 6 rarity tiers, rolled using Star Shards at the Race Gacha. This guide covers every race, its exact roll chance, and which passives are best for different playstyles.
How the Race System Works
Every new player starts with the Human Race, which has no passive bonuses. To get a different race, you spend Star Shards at the Race Gacha to reroll. Each roll gives you a random race based on weighted probabilities.
There are two types of rolls:
- Standard Roll -- Normal probability distribution.
- Lucky Roll -- Different probability distribution that heavily favors rarer races.
Pity System
Abyss has a built-in pity system for race rolling:
- After 20 rolls, you are guaranteed an Epic or higher race.
- After 50 rolls, you are guaranteed a Legendary or higher race.
All 16 Races: Stats and Roll Chances
Common Races
| Race | Standard Chance | Lucky Chance | Passive |
|---|---|---|---|
| Human Race | Unrollable | N/A | None |
| Poop Race | 16.67% | 1% | +10% Damage |
| Coral Race | 16.67% | 1% | +10% Oxygen |
| Elf Race | 16.67% | 1% | +5% Speed |
Common races have a combined ~50% chance on standard rolls. Human Race cannot be rolled -- it's your default race that you start with.
- Poop Race gives a flat 10% Damage boost. Solid for a Common.
- Coral Race gives 10% Oxygen, useful for longer dives.
- Elf Race gives only 5% Speed, making it the weakest Common.
Uncommon Races
| Race | Standard Chance | Lucky Chance | Passive |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monkey Race | 9.7% | 9% | +10% Speed, +10% Weight |
| Cyclops Race | 9.7% | 9% | -0.2s Cooldown, +10% Damage |
| Fish Race | 9.7% | 9% | +10% Oxygen, +5% Speed |
Uncommon races give two bonuses each. Cyclops Race stands out with a Cooldown reduction and Damage boost, making it the best Uncommon for combat.
Rare Races
| Race | Standard Chance | Lucky Chance | Passive |
|---|---|---|---|
| Puffer Race | 4.7% | 12.7% | +10% Oxygen, +15% Weight |
| Spirit Race | 4.7% | 12.7% | -0.3s Cooldown, +8% Cash |
| Narwhal Race | 4.7% | 12.7% | +8% Speed, +15% Weight |
Rare races have a combined ~14% standard chance. Note that Lucky Rolls actually give you a higher chance at Rare (12.7% each vs 4.7%).
- Spirit Race is the first race with a Cash bonus (+8%), directly increasing your fish sell income. The -0.3s Cooldown is also strong.
- Puffer Race has a unique passive: Spiky Body -- reflects 20% of incoming melee damage back to the attacker. Also has +15% Weight for bigger hauls.
- Narwhal Race has Piercing Horn -- 10% chance to deal double damage. Combined with +8% Speed and +15% Weight, it's a strong all-rounder.
- Spirit Race has Last Breath -- after dying, you regenerate 30% of your oxygen instead (3-minute cooldown). A survival lifeline.
Epic Races
| Race | Standard Chance | Lucky Chance | Passive |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crab Race | 2.5% | 10.5% | +15% Oxygen, +15% Weight, +5% XP |
| Anglerfish Race | 2.5% | 10.5% | +8% Cash, -0.2s Cooldown, +12% Damage |
Only two Epic races, both strong. Anglerfish Race is considered one of the best all-around races in the game: Cash bonus for income, Cooldown reduction for faster catching, and 12% Damage for combat. Crab Race is the explorer's pick with bonuses to Oxygen, Weight, and XP.
Legendary Races
| Race | Standard Chance | Lucky Chance | Passive |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vampire Squid Race | 1% | 5% | +20% Oxygen, +10% XP, +15% Weight |
| Shark Race | 1% | 5% | -0.4s Cooldown, +20% Damage |
Legendary races have only a 1% standard chance each.
- Shark Race is the combat king: -0.4s Cooldown and +20% Damage means significantly faster and harder-hitting shots. This stacks with gun stats.
- Vampire Squid Race is the survival king: +20% Oxygen lets you stay underwater much longer, +15% Weight means bigger hauls, and +10% XP speeds up leveling.
Mythical Races
| Race | Standard Chance | Lucky Chance | Passive |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kraken Race | 0.1% | 0.5% | +20% Weight, +15% XP, +15% Cash |
| Sea Angel Race | 0.1% | 0.5% | +10% Speed, +25% Oxygen, +15% Cash |
Mythical races are extraordinarily rare at 0.1% standard chance (1 in 1,000 rolls).
- Kraken Race is the money-maker: +15% Cash is the highest Cash bonus in the game, combined with +20% Weight and +15% XP. Every fish you sell is worth 15% more.
- Sea Angel Race maximizes mobility and survival: +25% Oxygen is the highest Oxygen bonus, +10% Speed for fast traversal, and +15% Cash ties with Kraken for income.

Should You Use Standard or Lucky Rolls?
Lucky Rolls shift the probability heavily toward higher-rarity races. Here's the difference:
| Rarity | Standard Total | Lucky Total |
|---|---|---|
| Common | ~50% | ~3% |
| Uncommon | ~29% | ~27% |
| Rare | ~14% | ~38% |
| Epic | ~5% | ~21% |
| Legendary | ~2% | ~10% |
| Mythical | ~0.2% | ~1% |
Lucky Rolls are always better if you're aiming for Rare or above. Standard Rolls only make sense if you literally just want any change from Human Race.
How to Get Star Shards for Race Rolling
Star Shards are earned through:
- Quests -- Most NPCs reward Star Shards upon quest completion (5-50 Shards per quest).
- Shard Packs (Gamepasses) -- Purchasable with Robux (49 R$ for 200 Shards up to 1,199 R$ for 8,000 Shards).
- Treasure Chests -- Found while exploring biomes.
- Quest Rewards -- Many quests give Star Shards as rewards.
Frequently Asked Questions About Races
Can I change my race?
Yes. Every reroll replaces your current race with a new random one. There is no way to pick a specific race.
Do race passives stack with equipment?
Yes. A Shark Race (-0.4s Cooldown) using a Ruined Gun (1.7s Cooldown) would effectively have ~1.3s Cooldown between shots. Damage bonuses also multiply with gun damage.
What happens if I roll Human Race?
You can't. Human Race is unrollable. It's only obtainable as your default starting race.
How many Star Shards does it take to get a Mythical race?
On average, around 1,000 standard rolls for a 0.1% chance, or 200 lucky rolls for a 0.5% chance. The pity system guarantees Legendary at 50 rolls but does not guarantee Mythical.
