Much like TBC, every player will need to fly in WoTLK Classic, it’s just the nature of the expansion. This is usually obtained by purchasing Cold Weather Flying but comes at a cost of 1,000 Gold.
However, what if I told you that it’s actually possible to get flying for free!? Now, this is obviously not a method that your epic-geared main will likely need, but it can certainly be useful for alts and new players.
WotLK Classic: How to Get Flying For Free
This method has two simple requirements: The character is level 77 or above, and it hasn’t learned Cold Weather Flying yet.
The way to get flying for free is to locate an NPC in the Stormpeaks called “Honest” Max (located at 40.7, 84.5). Max likes to give away “Slightly Used Flying Mounts”.
If you meet the requirements, Max will provide you with either Loaned Gryphon Reins or Loaned Wind Rider Reins.
This is a 150% speed flying mount, and it’s 100% free.
The only downside to this mount is that it can only be used in Sholazar Basin, Storm Peaks, and Icecrown. These zones are very good zones for farming though, and you can use the gold for other things whilst you farm gold in these zones.
Why did Blizzard add this to the game? Largely because the Stormpeaks requires flying to progress through and it would be a pretty bad bottleneck for new players if they couldn’t afford to fly yet.
As previously stated, this isn’t going to be super useful to veteran players and isn’t really a permanent solution to flying, but it can definitely come in handy when you can’t afford flying or don’t want to spend the gold on it just yet.
