Minecraft Pickaxes Guide 2024 (April)

Here is our Minecraft Pickaxes guide. The pickaxe is one of the most commonly used tools in the game, and it’s required to mine all ores, rock, rock-based blocks, and metal-based blocks. If you have a pickaxe, then you’ll be able to mine blocks at faster speeds, depending on the material it’s made from. Specific pickaxe materials are also required to harvest certain types of blocks.

Minecraft Pickaxes: Crafting

Pickaxes are crafted by using 2 sticks and 3 identical units of tool material. For example, in order to craft Diamond Pickaxe, you’ll need three planks (any kind of them) or Iron or Gold or Diamond Ingot, and two sticks. The upgrade process of the pickaxe is also very similar to this, as in order for you to have Netherite Pickaxe, you’d have to have Diamond Pickaxe and Netherite Ingot.

Minecraft Pickaxes: Repairing

Pickaxes are items that can easily be broken, so repairing them is really an important part of playing the game. Pickaxes can be repaired in an anvil by adding units of the tier’s repair material, with each of it restoring 25% of the pickaxe’s maximum durability, rounded down. If you match damaged Pickaxes, you’ll receive one that will have the ability of the two combined, plus an extra 5% durability.

It’s possible to combine two damaged pickaxes of the same type in any crafting interface, which will create a new pickaxe of the same type with the durability of the old ones added together, plus 10%. Note that any enchantment on the old spades will be lost.

Minecraft Pickaxes: Types

There are multiple categories of Pickaxes. They are divided into several categories, as different pickaxes are used to mine different kinds of ores and blocks. For example, sone can be mined with any pickaxe, but gold ore must be mined with an iron, diamond, or netherite pickaxe. If the player fails to mine the ore with one of these, they will receive nothing from the process of mining. Also, different pickaxes mine many materials at different speeds.

Minecraft Pickaxes: Using as a Weapon

On the other hand, Pickaxes can be used to hit a mob, generating a stronger attack than using fists. Pickaxes lose 2 durability points when used as a weapon too, as they have an attack speed modifier of -2.8. This means that they take about 0.83 seconds to recover. All of them have an attack speed of 1.2 hits per second, as they deal different damage based on the type.

Logically, Netherite Pickaxe would deal the most damage at 7.2 per second. The diamond pickaxe is next with 6, then you have Iron Pickaxe with 4.8, Stone Pickaxe with 3.6, while Wooden and Golden Pickaxe deal 2.4 damage per second.

Best Pickaxe in Minecraft

Netherite Pickaxe is always the best choice for you to have, as you can mine different kinds of ore and stone with it and deal better damage to mobs with it. It’s followed by a Diamond ax, Golden, Iron, Stone, and Wooden.

Differences Between Java vs Bedrock Editions

If you play the Bedrock Edition, Pickaxes will deal different amounts of damage, as the order is the same. Netherite is again the best with 7 damage, Diamond is with 6, Iron is with 5, Stone Pickaxe deals 4 damage, and Wooden and Golden Pickaxes deal 3 damage.

Pillagers and vindicators have a chance of dropping a damaged iron pickaxe when killed during a raid. This way, the pickaxe has a 50% chance of being enchanted with some random enchantments, as this is only possible in Bedrock Edition.

Enchanting Pickaxes

All of the axes have their own Enchanted editions. They provide more bonuses and can be a crucial element for you to mine more ores. The Enchanted editions are also divided in the same chronological order as their original versions, as their probabilities are the same as a level-20 to level-39 enchantment would be on an enchantment table that had no cap at level 30.

Trading

When it comes to trading, novice-level toolsmith villagers have a 25% chance to sell stone pickaxes for one emerald. As for the journeyman-level toolsmith villagers, their chance to sell enchanted iron pickaxes for 3 emeralds is 25%. At last, we have the master-level toolsmith villagers, as they always sell enchanted diamond pickaxes for 13 emeralds.

Conclusion

We hope that we explained something more about pickaxes and their usage in Minecraft. As a very often utilized tool, you need to have proper knowledge of it before using it in the game. Therefore, our guide has provided some good insight on pickaxes, their enchanted versions, the strongest one by order, and what ore you can get by using different pickaxes. Also, pay attention that some ores aren’t available when you mine them with a non-suitable pickaxe
