Wondering which horse to choose? Check out our Skyrim: Best Horse guide.
Skyrim has a vast and massive open world that you can explore at your own pace. It features tons of interesting locations and unique points of interest that you can stumble upon while discovering the map. Since the map is extremely large, it would take a long time to travel on your feet. That is why the game allows you to have a trusty stead that will help you gallop across the map swiftly. This guide will show you how to call your horse in Skyrim.
How to Call Horse in Skyrim?
To call your horse in Skyrim, you need to fast travel to a location and it will automatically appear next to your character. There is no dedicated button that allows you to call your horse to yourself in Skyrim.
If you are curious to know which horses are the best to have in the game and how you can get one in the first place, continue reading to find out. With that said, let’s take a look at the alternate methods to call your horse in Skyrim and how you can get one.
How to Get a Horse
Before we talk about how you can fast travel and teleport the horse to yourself, let’s take a look at how you can get a horse. Since you won’t have your trusty stead when you start the game, you will have to work your way to getting one. There are a few methods that you can use, and we’ve listed all of them down below.
Buy a Horse
The first thing you can do is to buy a horse from various stables spread across the map of Skyrim. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to find a “superior” horse from the stables. All of them are of the same quality and cost 1000 gold. If you want to know exactly where some of the stables are, we’ve listed them below:
- Markarth Stables
- Riften Stables
- Whiterun Stables
- Solitude Stables
- Windhelm Stables
Visting these stables will allow you to purchase a horse for 1000 gold. All of them offer the same quality so, get one as soon as you approach the first stable.
Complete Unique Side Quests
Fortunately, you can complete a few unique side quests that allow you to get a few special horses as a reward. There are three unique horses that you can get by completing the quests.
Firstly, you can get Shadowmere by joining the Black Brotherhood and completing their quest called Cure for Madness. During the quest, Astrid will summon Shadowmere for you to ride and chase Cicero. While you do not need to ride this horse to complete the quest, it is suggested that you do. As compared to normal horses, he has a higher HP, more regeneration, and higher stamina as well.
Secondly, you can get Arvak by getting the Dawnguard DLC. Once you have the DLC, play through it and you’ll come across a task where you have to collect his skull in the Soul Carin. The best part is that this is the only horse that you can “summon” since you need to cast a spell to call him. He will not disappear when you are riding him but the spell’s cooldown will start when you dismount him.
Finally, the last unique horse you can get is Frost. You can get him during the quest called Promises to Keep in Riften. You’ll be tasked to steal him from the Black-Briar Lodge and you can keep him after that. As for the stats, he has the same as a normal horse. However, he has a lot of stamina which allows him to run further. Also, what’s strange is that the game will not show him as your horse despite you owning him. However, he will act like your horse and will teleport to you when you fast travel.
Tame a Horse From the Wild
Finally, you can find a random horse from the wild and try to tame it. While this is a good option if you want to save gold and get a free horse, the stats won’t be all that good. You can find horses roaming around the world of Skyrim. Once you find them, you’ll have to chase one and mount it to make it yours.
How to Call Your Horse
As mentioned earlier, you cannot call your horse to your location in Skyrim. The best method to get your horse is to fast travel so that it teleports to you. If you want to call horses like in The Witcher 3, you can download various mods that allow you to press a button to whistle and call your horse. This is a good method on PC but if you are playing on consoles, you cannot press any button to call your horse.
